Cavity risk is not only about sweets. Refined starchy snacks such as crackers, crisps and dry cereal break down into sugars in the mouth and pack easily into grooves between teeth, where they feed bacteria for a long time.

Frequency is the main driver

Every time a child eats, the mouth becomes more acidic and then slowly recovers. A child who grazes on crackers through the afternoon keeps their teeth in that acidic phase far longer than a child who eats the same amount at one sitting.

Practical swaps

  • Keep snacks to defined times rather than continuous grazing.
  • Pair starchy foods with water, cheese, plain yoghurt or vegetables.
  • Offer water — not juice or flavoured milk — between meals.
  • Brush at night after the last food or drink of the day.

The honest summary

No single snack is uniquely responsible for cavities. Sticky, retentive, frequently eaten foods — sweet or starchy — matter most, together with how well teeth are brushed and whether fluoride is used.
