A first dental visit is mostly a meeting: a chance for your child to see the room, the chair and the person, and for you to ask everything you have been wondering about.

Before the appointment

  • Choose a time of day when your child is usually rested and fed.
  • Use simple, neutral words. Avoid promising that nothing will happen, and avoid words like 'hurt' or 'needle'.
  • Let your child bring a familiar comfort object.

During the appointment

A first visit usually includes a gentle look at the teeth and gums, a discussion of brushing and diet, and — if the child is comfortable — a clean or a preventive application. Nothing is forced. Building trust is more valuable than finishing a checklist.

If your child is anxious

Anxiety is common and manageable. Short, positive, predictable visits build confidence over time. Tell the team in advance about previous difficult experiences, sensory sensitivities or medical history so the visit can be adapted.
