I’m Dr. Rafif Tayara, or Dr. Smile as many children and parents know me — a specialist pediatric dentist in Dubai. Join me as I share my pediatric dentistry journey, featured in a recent publication in Al Khaleej Times: breaking barriers, crossing cultures and creating a unique path in children’s oral health.

From humble beginnings to pediatric dentistry leadership in Dubai

Starting from humble roots in Canada, I’ve navigated my way to becoming a trailblazer in pediatric dentistry in Dubai. Overcoming those early challenges is, more than anything, a testament to perseverance. Today my work is firmly rooted in healthcare across the UAE and the wider Middle East — and my upcoming book, dedicated to my twins, is the next chapter.

That same success has driven a mission to empower women and mothers in the workforce. It goes back to raising my twins alone as an expat for ten years while pursuing a demanding clinical career. It made me realise how important self-investment is for women seeking financial freedom in this region.

Cultural diversity in children’s dental care

My journey involves embracing different cultures, speaking multiple languages and absorbing several medical schools of thought during my training. Those factors have been pivotal: they let me connect effectively with the wonderfully diverse families who live in the UAE. And as a mum myself, I can relate on a personal level — not just a clinical one.

Known as Dr. Smile, I’m a trusted figure for families in Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai — not only for clinical expertise in pediatric dentistry, but as a global advocate for children’s oral health.

Awards and recognitions

Along the way, a few moments of recognition have been genuinely humbling.

  • Award of Academic Excellence from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Canada–Lebanon.
  • Wondermum Award for Dentist of the Year, 2022.
  • Recognised by the NYC Journal as one of the Top 10 Dentists to Look Out For in 2022.

Authorship and entrepreneurship

Alongside my dental practice, I’m excited about a new venture as an author. My children’s book aims to inspire young Arab women — and to make a dental visit something children can picture as a story before they ever sit in the chair. At the same time I’m launching my own brand, marking a new chapter as a healthcare voice in the region.

Success in the competitive Middle East healthcare scene goes beyond technical skill; it’s about building bonds in the community. That ability to connect has translated into a following of 67,800 on Instagram, where parents ask the everyday questions they don’t always get to ask in a clinic.

Why I keep doing this

A deep passion for changing lives through pediatric dentistry fuels my commitment to making a difference. My journey — and a fairly determined attitude — seems to resonate with women worldwide who aspire to break into male-dominated professions.

Join me as I put smiles on faces, one child at a time.
